Shorei Kempo Karate

"Karate is my secret..."

Choki Motobu

1870 - 1941

Choki Motobu Motobu was born in Akahira Village, Shuri, the third son of a high-ranking anji (feudal lord). The eldest son, Choyu, was trained by their father, Motobu Udun, in the family's secret ti system (now Motobu-ryu).

As the third son, Choki's education was not a top priority. He aquired the basics of ti on his own and regularly practiced with his makiwara board. As a young man, Motobu would visit Tsuji and challenge other strong young men. Along with earning a reputation for aggressiveness, he also applied this practical experience to the development of many techniques in his system. Choki Motobu is considered by some to be a bit of a loose canon, as he had no master to whom he gave his allegiance.
